Arsenal FC’s manager Arsene Wenger may have disappointed the club’s fans by barely signing any new talent this season, but the Gunners’ management has brought in a new starlet hoping to score points off the pitch.
Former MTV European Networks lawyer Svenja Geissmar has been appointed Arsenal FC’s first-ever general counsel (see story).
In the past, the north London team has used Slaughter and May’s Nigel Boardman as its main lawyer.
But Geissmar joins a growing number of in-house lawyers at Premiership clubs, such as ex-Shearman & Sterling solicitor Simon Cliff (see story), reflecting the increasingly corporate structure behind the scenes at these multi-million pound businesses.
A media law specialist, Geissmar’s exact role, and how the club uses Slaughters (which was said to have encouraged the appointment), will be interesting, as legal bods progressively become big players at some of the biggest football clubs in the world.
