Gunderson axes eight associates

West Coast firm Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian has axed eight associates in its second round of layoffs

The cuts represent a 9 per cent reduction, taking the total number of associates to 82.
New recruits take the strain as six of the cuts come from the 2001 autumn intake of associates.
Gunderson laid off 16 associates and 28 support staff in October last year. Since then the firm has squeezed numbers by providing buyout packages for associates and upping the number of performance-related departures.
The rate of layoffs among the technology firms on the West Coast had been slowing. But Gunderson's announcement, following a larger set of cuts at Brobeck Phleger & Harrison in May, brings staffing issues back to centre stage.
