The RAC is most commonly known as a motoring organisation, providing breakdown cover for members wherever they may be. But a lot more goes on at the RAC than saving stranded motorists. The legal services arm, led by its enthusiastic head Jonathan Gulliford, has been spearheading a challenge to the traditions of the legal profession.
Gulliford and his team have long been lobbying for a change in practice rules to allow the RAC’s legal services department to operate, in effect, as a law firm. This, says Gulliford, would improve services to members and aid competition.
Gulliford has also been lobbying against proposals to raise the small claims limit for personal injury work to £5,000, claiming that it will seriously affect the ability for many people to claim compensation.
