Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal embarked on an aggressive hiring spree last year, aimed at raising its profile and boosting its revenue nationally.

Growing the partnership is so central to the firm's overall strategy that the firm has created a new management role focused solely on partner recruitment. Insurance partner Kara Baysinger became the firm's first lateral acquisition partner in September 2006. At the same time, the firm made IP litigator James Klenk the partner in charge of client services.

The current financial year marks Sonnenschein's 100th year of business and has been a period of rapid growth for the firm. In July 2006, Sonnenschein announced plans to open in Brussels. It also scooped a 10-lawyer hotel and hospitality team from Squire Sanders & Dempsey to launch its Phoenix office.

In 2007, partner Elliot Portney will become the firm's youngest chairman when he takes over from incumbent Duane Quaini.

Sonnenschein made £246.2m ($448m) in 2005, holding its position steady at number 57 in the table. The growth strategy should push the firm up the Global 100 in the coming years.
