Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) climbed two places up the Global 100 rankings last year to 27th, with the growth boosted primarily by its active Asia offices.
MoFo was one of the first firms to get a real foothold in Tokyo and now has 87 lawyers there generating work for the firm's US and European offices.
The firm's Japanese practice is its most active international business, regularly working for technology giants such as Sony, Fujitsu, Toshiba and Matsushita. MoFo also has a dedicated Japan practice group, based in the New York office and led by Michael Brawn.
The China offices in Shanghai and Beijing only have around 10 lawyers in total and have a lot of ground to make up on Tokyo, despite boasting the Beijing Olympic Organising Committee as a client.
MoFo is likely to follow a cautious European strategy in the short term, maintaining a presence in London and Brussels, but with no immediate plans to open more offices.
The next chapter in the firm's strategy will see greater integration between the Japanese, Chinese and European offices to work on more international mandates for the firm's flagship technology clients.
With a turnover of £377.5m ($687m), Morrison & Foerster is the largest firm headquarterered in San Francisco. Last year the firm's average profit per equity partner stood at £577,000 ($1.05m), up by an impressive 27 per cent on the previous year.
