Fulbright & Jaworski had a solid if unspectacular 2005, maintaining its position with a 10 per cent increase in turnover to £296.2m ($539m). This marked the first time the firm has broken the half-billion dollar barrier, and followed a similar 10 per cent increase on the previous year.
It was a similar story with average profit per equity partner for this Houston-based, energy-focused firm. The firm made a steady increase of 7 per cent to £393,000 ($715,000).
Fulbright has been bulking up with energy partners in its London and Middle East offices, with regular raids on Texan rival Vinson & Elkins, and long-time Middle East resident Denton Wilde Sapte.
The London office gained a litigation practice for 2005 following the late 2004 hire of Lista Cannon from Richards Butler, who started the year representing Shell over a dispute on its oil reserves.
Fulbright has 14 offices, nine of them in the US, and four of those in Texas - an historic indicator of both the firm's roots and its heavy energy focus.
The firm established a Middle East presence to capitalise on the expanding energy and project finance markets in the region, opening simultaneously in both Riyadh and Dubai in November 2005.
Fulbright's other international office is Hong Kong and the firm has not signalled any intentions to expand its Asian practice.
