Under the leadership of managing partner Justin Spendlove, who joined the firm from Ashurst in March 2004, Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson boosted revenue from £197.3m ($359m) in 2004 to £214.3m ($390m) in 2005, moving the firm two places up the table to 69th.

Spendlove was voted to the top job in January 2005. His focus on key European clients and international expansion with an emphasis on M&A advice has helped push up revenue at the firm.

Elsewhere, the firm's relationship with NTL has paid off in recent years. In October 2005, Fried Frank acted as financing counsel to the cable company during its £3.3bn ($6bn) merger with Telewest. And the firm was instructed again in December that year, when NTL snapped up Virgin Mobile for £817m ($1.5bn).

Spendlove oversees the four-partner European practice committee, which has implemented an expansionist strategy in the main jurisdictions. In December 2005, the firm launched its London real estate practice with the hire of Nigel Heilpern from UK firm Nabarro Nathonson.

A month before that, Fried Frank entered into merger talks with French firm Lantourne.

Asia is key to the future of the international strategy. In September 2006 Fried Frank launched in China, raiding Simmons & Simmons for five partners.
