What’s your biggest work/career mistake?
The failure to take up the position of attorney-general of St Helena in the South Atlantic. That is a great regret of mine.

What was your first-ever job?
Working as an occupational therapy assistant in a geriatric hospital.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?
Having to tell Ken Livingstone he couldn’t take on Maggie Thatcher and win (legally, at least!).

Where is the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
Speak to the secretaries or the most recent recruits (their instincts and antennae are most finely tuned).

What time do you usually leave the office?
5.30pm, to ensure I spend time with my young children.

What do you do at weekends?
Football is a passion.

What’s your favourite restaurant?
The Hengist in Aylesford, Kent.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?
A pilot.

Who’s your hero and why?
My late father for being a great role model. Whenever I am in any doubt, I just ask myself what he would have done in the same situation.

What’s the best thing about your job?
The ability to operate a thriving legal practice in the heart of a large local authority, combining private sector entrepreneurship with public sector ethos.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?
Keeping all the balls in the air at the same time – and there are a lot of balls.

Building the Happiness Centred Business by Dr Paddi Lund (again).

Watership Down by Richard Adams.

What’s the most exciting deal/case you’ve worked on and why?
The one that will come in tomorrow. Every day throws up new and exciting projects that seem to eclipse the last.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what two luxury items would you take?
My PDA and a radio that would pick up FiveLive.

What’s the worst partner conference location you’ve attended and why?
I’ve never attended one.

What’s the longest you’ve worked without sleep?
My wife says that I work in my sleep, so I guess the question should be what’s the longest I’ve slept without work – probably two hours.

If a movie was being made about your life, which actor would play you and why?
Tom Hanks – with hopefully a mixture of humour, strength and compassion.

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with and why?
Myself. I prefer the company of others.
