Gays and lesbians will create a new "growth industry" within law and the legal profession, which must think of ways to deal with the demand, a conference for gay and lesbian lawyers heard.
Angela Mason, director of the campaign group Stonewall, told the London conference "Making the Difference", which was held on 19 April, that litigation and the courts were now increasingly being used by gays and lesbians to fight for equal rights.
Martin Bowley QC, chair of the Bar Lesbian and Gay Group, which organised the conference with the Lesbian and Gay Lawyers Association, said it was only within the past 10 years that there had been recognition that wider options existed away from campaigning to achieve equality.
He said, the conference was aimed to equip lawyers with the necessary insight to best serve gay and lesbian clients at a grass roots level.
