Spanish firm Garrigues has scooped former European Commission legal service lawyer Jose Luis Buendia Sierra to head up its Brussels office.
Buendia Sierra, who joins today, will replace Stephen Pickard, who retired in July 2005 after 17 years at the firm.
He has over 15 years experience at the European Commission, working at the Directorate-General for Competition and at the Internal Market and Services Directorate-General.
The Brussels office which opened in 1985 now counts five lawyers and exclusively deals with EU law and competition matters.
Buendia Sierra said that it was early days for him to comment on the future strategy of the Brussels office, but added the office was expected to grow significantly over the coming years.
Madrid’s head of European law and competition team Marcos Araujo said: “We could not have found anyone better suited to assisting our clients in EU law matters”
