Spanish leader Garrigues has launched a tax practice in Portugal after hiring the entire tax team from independent firm Castro Silva & Associates.
Fernando Castro Silva will join Garrigues Leónidas & Matos, the Portuguese arm of Garrigues, in the Lisbon office as partner to head up the new tax practice. He will be supported by his entire team, which also moves across from professional services firm Castro Silva & Associates.
Castro Silva has 23 years experience in tax law, advising Portuguese business groups, credit institutions, insurance companies, civil engineering firms and multinationals.
The additions swell Garrigues Leónidas & Matos to nearly 60 lawyers and Garrigues as a whole to 1,525 lawyers, of which more than 500 are tax practitioners.
The hires come just weeks after the firm bolstered its international network with the formal opening of its office in Casablanca, Morocco.
To coincide with the hires, the new Portuguese tax practice will become a member of global alliance of tax professionals Taxand, which includes 1,000 professionals from 21 firms.
