Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has broken into the top two firms ranked by number of FTSE 100 clients, overtaking rival Linklaters.
It is the first time that the Hemscott Law Firms Rankings have placed a firm other than Slaughter and May and Linklaters in first or second place since the table launched 20 years ago.
Freshfields corporate head Mark Rawlinson said: “We’re delighted. One of our strategies was to increase our FTSE 100 roster - it’s been a concerted effort not only to capture new clients but also to keep our existing ones happy.”
Slaughters came out on top this year, with 29 FTSE100 clients, followed by Freshfields with 23 and Linklaters with 22.
Freshfields had just nine FTSE100 clients in 1991, while Linklaters & Paines was on top with 22.
Allen & Overy has 18 FTSE100 clients, up from three in 1991, while Herbert Smith’s roster increased from 13 to 21 over the 20-year period.
