Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has hired an Allen & Overy lawyer as its first-ever global head of Islamic finance.
Tarek El-Assra, previously a senior associate at A&O, is joining Freshfields as a counsel in the firm’s Dubai office.
The appointment follows the news less than a month ago that partner Pervez Akhtar, hired from A&O in December, had been promoted to the role of regional managing partner for the Middle East and North Africa (5 October 2011).
El-Assra has experience of both conventional and Islamic finance transactions.
Freshfields’ global finance head Alan Newton said demand for knowledge in Islamic finance was “increasingly exceeding” that of conventional finance deals.

Tarek is an excellent lawyer and a proper gentleman. This is a real coup for Freshfields who would greatly benefit from his charm and experience.

Islamic Finance is nothing but a big joke, rather its a scam, which only benefits few investment bankers, lawyers and uneducated clerics who tend to shower their blessings on sharia complaint instruments being hired as a retainer. End of the day, the common Muslims who invest are the sufferers. This is not Islam, this is fraud !!

An excellent choice. Islamic finance is a strong and viable alternative to other financial systems and I am sure it will prove its success in the current global situation.

I expect it will be a challenging role - leading a very large team ... of one!

Yes, but if there is money there, then you will find lawyers.

If Islamic finance is so important to Freshfields why didn't they hire at partner level? Another example of Freshfields' ignorance about the banking/finance sector.
