Freshfields partner's US accolade

A Freshfields partner has become the first lawyer from a non-US firm to chair the New York State Bar Association's tax section.

Robert Scarborough, a New York-based tax partner with the firm, will lead the 3000-member group for a year.

The tax section's main role is to prepare reports on tax law topics for submission to federal, state and city government officials. The reports analyse and make recommendations on proposed legislation and regulation.

Scarborough says: “My role within the organisation is to lead, supervise and co-ordinate that process. We write very objective reports and government officials rely on them heavily to get a view from all practising lawyers.”

He says his new role is good for raising the profile of Freshfields in the New York market, but will not affect his work.

Scarborough specialises in the taxation of capital markets transactions and complex financial instruments. Before joining Freshfields he served in the US treasury department's office of tax policy as an associate tax legislative counsel.
