Albert Jan van den Berg is leaving to set up his own arbitration boutique in Brussels later this year.
He joined from Stibbe (then Stibbe Simont Monahan Duhot) in 1999, when Freshfields set up its greenfield Dutch practice.
It is understood that he wishes to focus on acting as an arbitrator and has found that he is sometimes conflicted out from this role because companies involved in disputes also appear on Freshfields' client list.
Van den Berg is vice-president and former secretary-general of the Netherlands Arbitration Institute and vice-president of the London Court of International Arbitration.
He has acted as counsel and arbitrator in administered and ad hoc arbitrations around the world, on matters such as construction, defence, projects, distributorship, energy, futures and options and IT.
Freshfields Amsterdam managing partner Hans Galavazi says: "We're sorry to lose Albert Jan, but understand his wish to focus on acting as an arbitrator in international arbitrations. He's played an important role in the development of our Amsterdam office and we'll also miss him on a personal level."
International arbitration partner Nigel Rawding adds: "While there's no doubt that Albert Jan has a tremendous individual reputation, the impact of his departure on the international arbitration group will be limited. He's a first-rate arbitrator and we feel sure that he'll remain a good friend."
Freshfields' international arbitration group has 23 partners.
