Freshfields adds to US litigation team with Kramer Levin hire

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has continued to expand its US litigation presence with the hire of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel partner Timothy Harkness.

Harkness, who has joined the firm’s New York office, takes the number of partners practising across the New York and Washington litigation groups to 12. Freshfields has now hired eight white collar crime and litigation partners in the US in the past two years, along with 30 associates.

Global litigation chief Chris Pugh said in a statement: “Tim’s arrival provides our US litigation practice with an energetic rising star who brings the multi-jurisdictional expertise that our clients require.

“His experience deepens our existing civil litigation practice and will allow us to handle the largest and most challenging disputes. We’re very pleased with the way in which the practice is growing.”

At Kramer Levin, Harkness was involved in a number of high-profile litigations including those involving Parmalat Securities, Enron and the recent investigation into Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

Harkness said: “I’m excited to join Freshfields’ US civil litigation practice at a time when it’s growing quickly and building a strong reputation among major financial and corporate institutions, domestically and globally. I look forward to working with a special team.”
