Leicester law firm Freethcartwright is dealing with 60 claims made against the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
The trust is being sued after an internal audit of its cervical screening service unearthed evidence of 'false negative' results.`The claims come in part from families of women who died of cervical cancer after being wrongly given the all-clear.`Most of the claims have been made by women who had to undergo more radical treatment than would have been necessary had the condition been spotted.`Professor Mike Richards, the Government's 'cancer tsar', admitted mistakes had been made but denied the trust had been negligent.`It has been estimated that each claim could be worth as much as £100,000 but the NHS Litigation Authority will bear the brunt of the payments. The claimants are not expected to have to go to court, so interim payments are expected to be made quickly.
