Junior Herbert Smith partner Louise Freestone proved that she is one of the rising stars in the firm’s corporate department after her involvement in three of last year’s most high-profile deals.
The climax for Freestone was her role advising Hollinger on the long-running battle to sell The Telegraph Group. The auction sale, arguably the hottest deal witnessed by the City last year, eventually concluded on 22 June when the group was sold to the Barclay brothers.
Meanwhile, last June Freestone and fellow corporate partner Charles Howarth led the Herbert Smith team advising Virgin Group on the listing of Virgin Mobile – one of the largest IPOs completed in 2003.
Freestone’s bumper year concluded after advising longstanding client Roger De Haan on the £1.45bn sale of Saga, the financial services and travel provider for the over 50s, to the management team, supported by Charterhouse Capital Partners. The auction sale was unusual because it was run on a dual track with a proposed IPO, which was aborted only a week before the sale.
All in all, 2004 was packed with achievements for Freestone, who has been a partner for less than three years.
