INDIA’S largest law firm FoxMandal Little has revealed details of its new London base – the first-ever opening in the UK by an Indian commercial law firm.

The launch, first revealed by The Lawyer (27 March 2007), will go ahead on 18 February. The office will practise Indian law only, focusing on attracting EU-based clients seeking to invest in India.

It will also seek to advise Indian companies setting up in the EU or involved in EU arbitration, for which it will work jointly with local law firms.

Head of the international practice, partner Som Mandal, said: “We feel there’s a huge market for international and UK-based companies in need of advice in India.

“Clients will feel comfortable walking across and getting advice in real time, not waiting for a call back the next day due to timezone issues.”

The London office will be staffed by English-Indian dual-qualified partner Ajit Mishra, plus one consultant and three associates.

Joining them for 10 days a month will be partner Vineet Aneja, as well as Mandal.

Mandal stressed that practising English law is not on the cards in the foreseeable future, adding: “In England there’s already an abundance of good, qualified lawyers, so why would we want to compete?”As first reported by The Lawyer (24 July 2006), 38-partner FoxMandal was created through a merger of India’s oldest law firms, Little & Co and Fox Mandal, in 2006.

It practises banking, corporate, dispute resolution, employment, IT and real estate law, and has offices in Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. It also practises in Dhaka(Bangladesh) under the name Fox Mandal Hossain.
