Fountain Court silk Craig Orr QC has defected to rival magic circle set One Essex Court.
Orr, who took silk in 2006, has a particular focus on major banking and financial disputes and is widely considered to be one of the leading young silks at the commercial bar.
It is rare for silks to move between the top commercial sets - they generally prefer to remain loyal to the chambers where they undertook their training.
In a statement Fountain Court said Orr had left for “his own personal reasons”.
The Lawyer revealed (24 January) how loyalties are being tested to the full, with more barristers switching chambers to take advantage of the litigation boom.
Last month Blackstone Chambers added Scotland’s leading barrister Richard Keen QC to its roster.

Really, who cares? There is a monumental crisis at Tge bottom of the profession with 3 out of 4 of those capable of practice at the Bar unable even to secure pupillage after spending a King's ransom on the training courses, and innumerable pre-pupillage barristers and pre-training solicitors being exploited as paralegals on barely more than minimum wage while equity partners pull in six and seven figure salaries. Who cares about the various money-bags creaming it at the top switching chambers to cream it further?

I think that makes 3 barrister departures in as many years. We can add to that the 5 or so staff leavers.
Sounds as though business is good at this particular 'Magic Circle' set.

Absolutely. As confirmed by the outgoing Chairman at the last Bar Conference when he pointed out it was also an ethical crisis.
However, as any business-focused person will immediately have realised, for anyone being unethically exploited in this way there's a commercial solution: cut their throats. Turn it around. Learn everything you can. Learn their marketing as well as their law. Then get together with your mates, find enough qualified counsel in say BACFI who might be inclined to return to practice, and who understand commerce much better than their Chambers brethren. Start an ABS. Then you can match such ethically dysfunctional Chambers in law/legal systems and beat the hell out them commercially.

I'm sure the survivors at this particular 'Magic Circle' set will desperately miss your bonhomie and all round good cheer as they struggle on!

Perhaps we should advise the last survivor to turn out the lights when he leaves.
