Former Capgemini counsel re-emerges in Barclays IT role

Barclays Bank has hired Capgemini’s former general counsel for the UK and Ireland Barry Wong to head its legal IT outsourcing and supplier team. Wong will work with Andrew Collier, Barclays’ head of IT, on IT outsourcing deals.

Wong worked for Allen & Overy, Bristows and Norton Rose before joining IBM. At IBM he started off as a corporate lawyer, but later moved on to IT outsourcing transactions.

He moved to IT contractor Capgemini Ernst & Young at the end of 2003, becoming head of the six-lawyer in-house team.

Wong replaced former general counsel Gavin Wakefield and completed work on a successful bid for the Inland Revenue’s IT work, beating EDS and Accenture to the post.

Capgemini promoted Jane Bevan to the position of UK and Ireland general counsel following the shock departure of Wong. She was Wong’s deputy and will now report to UK chief financial officer Christine Hodgson.

Wong could not be contacted for comment before The Lawyer went to press.
