TSB dumps UK-only strategy and attacks German market with Berlin hire
Travers Smith Braithwaite has announced the launch of its first foreign law capability. The firm has opened an office in Berlin with new partner Karl Pilny who moves from Coudert Brothers. His role will be to build for the firm a German law capability in M&A, Private equity, TMT, competition and litigation. Pilny has been with Coudert for 10 years and opened the international firm's first German office in Berlin in 1995. Travers Smith already has a liaison office in Paris which only advises on English law and to date its international strategy has been based on close relationships with foreign law firms. The firm's managing partner Chris Carroll said that the decision to open in Berlin was prompted by turbulence in the German market. The uncertainty over the future of many firms in the market meant that the firm regarded the possibility of forming a German alliance as too unstable.
