Foley opens Tokyo office with IP star

US firm Foley & Lardner has gained its first foothold in Asia by launching an office in Tokyo.

The office, the firm’s second overseas office after Brussels, will initially be staffed by Marc Weinstein, an intellectual property (IP) associate who is being transferred from Washington. The office will also provide a part-time home for around 12 other attorneys who have practices that include Asian clients.

The Japanese practice will, in the meantime, focus mainly on IP and technology issues. It is also expected to handle cross-border insolvency work for US and Japanese clients.

Foley’s chairman and chief executive officer Ralf Boer said that further international expansion could be on the cards. “We are investigating opportunities there [in London] and in Germany,” he said, adding that Brussels may be further expanded.
