Flying Fysh

Phileas Fogg, that indomitable character in Jules Verne's novel Round the World in 80 Days, would have felt some affinity with our popular head of the Patents Appeal Court Michael Fysh QC, as Fysh is both a voracious traveller and has recently has taken up a deep interest in ballooning as a result of his involvement in a case concerning a hot air balloon manufacturer.

But each time he has sought a ride in one of the company's products, foul weather and rough winds have got in the way. However, it shows that he is continuing his old habits of taking advantage of his involvement in a case to hop off to foreign parts. During his tenancy days at 8 Old Square, he was forever requesting permission to travel to the manufacturer of whatever patent he was defending or attacking. Unsurprisingly, he had membership of more bar associations than countries most people visit in a lifetime.
