Fluffy pandas versus sweaty wrestlers

The long-running fight over the initials ‘WWF’ touches even the most cynical lawyers.

The pandas won round one and two of the fight, establishing that the wrestlers had infringed their trademark name and that damages were in order.

But the wrestlers gave them a black eye in the Court of Appeal recently, endangering their chances of a fat cheque for damages.

Lord Justice Chadwick ruled that the WWF had “abused the processes of the court” by raising its Wrotham Park damages claim in 2004, rather than 2001 when the Fund first won its injunction against the wrestlers. See story.

So the Judges said “WTF?” to the WWF, forcing the intriguing prospect of the pandas taking their case to the House of Lords.
