FLAG Telecom’s general counsel has quit after four years to move into the healthcare sector.

Kees van Ophem, who joined Zurich-based FLAG in October 2001, is leaving the international wholesale network transport and communications services provider in May to take up a legal role at New York-listed medical technology company Medtronic.

At FLAG van Ophem was integral in saving the Bermuda-incorporated company from financial ruin and was then heavily involved  in its acquisition, under Bermudian merger law, by Reliance Gateway in January 2004. He has been replaced temporarily by deputy general counsel Grant Macpherson.

At Medtronic, van Ophem will be based in Lausanne, Switzerland. He will report to general counsel Herb Riband, with both lawyers being based at Medtronic’s Swedish regional headquarters.

Medtronic declined to comment.
