The International Bar Association (IBA) has elected its first woman office holder.Dianna Kempe QC, the first woman in Bermuda to become a Queen's Counsel, was elected secretary general at the Melbourne meeting of the association.The appointment makes her a possible president for 1998.Scottish lawyer Professor Ross Harper was elected president from 1994 to 1996, with Desmond Fernando PC of Sri Lanka named vice- president. The treasurer is Klaus Bohlhoff of Germany.The association also confirmed the appointment of Paul Hoddinott as executive director from 1 January next year in place of Madeleine May, who has been with the IBA since 1979.Slaughter and May partner Francis Neate is the new chair for the association's section on business law.The new chair for the section on general practice is Robert Trevasani, and Wolf-Rainer Bentzien has been appointed chair of the section on energy law.
