SEVEN of the countrys top 20 law firms have released their carbon emission counts, with SJ Berwin spewing forth the most carbon at 19.2 tonnes of CO2 per lawyer.
The firm is officially carbon-neutral and claims to have been so since 2001. It has planted more than 15,000 trees in the UK to offset its CO2 emissions.
Linklaters is the second worst with 16.6 tonnes of CO2 emissions per lawyer in 2006 for the UK alone. But the magic circle firm has made a conscious effort to change this: this years emissions count has been slashed by almost 8,000 tonnes, with CO2 figures coming in at 5,707 tonnes for the year to date.
The firm claims this was achieved through converting its electricity source to a green tariff in October 2006.
Linklaters has also established a carbon management strategy with which the firm is aiming to reduce its emissions and is exploring options for offsetting unavoidable emissions.
Simmons & Simmons came in a close third, with each of its 889 lawyers getting through 15.75 tonnes of carbon worldwide, but the firm has offset this figure and is also officially carbon-neutral.
