Hogan Lovells strengthens Tokyo intellectual property team with of-counsel appointment

Hogan Lovells has expanded its intellectual property (IP) team in Tokyo with the appointment of Dr Frederick Ch’en, who started on 1 April 2013 as of-counsel.

This follows the recruitment of 14 IP practitioners in Tokyo over the past 12 months, including the hire of of-counsel Peter Hansen, who joined the firm in November 2012.

Ch’en is an English solicitor, a US attorney and patent attorney, a registered foreign attorney in Japan and a UK chartered biologist. He trained and worked for seven years at an international law firm in London before becoming head of IP at a top-tier global law firm in Tokyo. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Ch’en was a biomedical research scientist at Oxford University.

He has experience advising on a range of contentious and non-contentious IP matters, with particular focus on multi-jurisdictional patent litigation, as well as IP licensing and IP aspects of transactions. He also advises clients in the life sciences sector.

Hansen has more than 20 years’ experience advising on brand protection and enforcement, trademark and copyright infringement, domain names, patents and commercial IP matters.

He started his career in Australia, where he became partner of a top-tier law firm. Hansen then lived and worked in the Middle East for 11 years, managing IP firms in the United Arab Emirates and Syria.

The expanded Tokyo IP team comprises more than 30 IP professionals, including three partners, all of whom are bilingual in English and Japanese, offering both Japanese domestic and international IP legal advice (especially in Europe, the US and Asia).
