EU and competition law

Our EU & Competition Law team has developed a wide practice in European law in relation to which it advises a broad range of clients, both in the public and private sectors, at domestic and international level.

In addition to European and national competition law in the broad sense, our practice is particularly active in economic sectors highly regulated at European level.

In competition law, we provide assistance in relation to investigations by the national competition authorities and the European Commission, including ‘dawn raids’ in relation to cartel-type activity. We assist our clients regarding the compatibility of agreements and business practices with national and European competition law and the legality of third parties’ conduct.

Furthermore, we provide assistance regarding issues related to abuse of a dominant position in particular markets, merger control analysis and proceedings and compliance with the European Commission state aid rules.

We also represent clients before the national competition authority and the European Commission and European courts. We provide assistance in compliance matters, including the conduct of competition audits and the adoption of compliance programmes.

In the regulated markets, our practice covers the following economic sectors: banking and financial; EU tax law; transport (including road, rail and air sectors); energy (electricity, gas and emissions); communications; postal services; and EU public procurement rules.

The core work of our practice area also involves advising on a range of EU law issues related to the EC Treaties and Institutions and EC Regulations and Directives across all sectors of the economy, in addition to internal market issues such as the free movement of goods, services, persons and capital.

We regularly represent clients in their dealings with the European institutions in which many members of our team have worked prior to joining our practice. We often act for clients before the European Courts of Justice and the European Court of First Instance. Our presence in Brussels through our local office ensures that our clients’ interests are represented before decision makers in the institutions.
