Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW) has slashed the number of departments graduates spend time in during their training contracts.
The firm has abolished its six-seat structure and now requires trainee solicitors to complete six-month stints in four different departments instead.
FFW’s graduate recruitment partner Matthew Lohn (pictured) said: “There’s a paradigm between giving trainees lots of choice and genuine experience. FFW’s strategy is to focus on corporate, regulatory and IP & technology work, so it follows that we want candidates to understand that and to join the firm with a clearer idea of the type of lawyer they want to be.”
“By spending six months in a department instead of four our trainees will be able to get more involved in deals and cases as the typical commercial transaction lasts for several months and not just a couple of weeks,” he added.
The changes to FFW’s seat structure are part of a wider review of the firm’s graduate recruitment strategy, which resulted in the firm cutting the size of its annual trainee intake from 20 to 15 (22 February 2010).
FFW has also recently introduced verbal and logical reasoning tests as part of its online recruitment process in a bid to weed out weaker candidates prior to the application form stage.
