Facebook hires former White House man as GCFacebook has hired Kirkland & Elllis partner Theodore Ullyot as its new general counsel.

Ullyot was the former chief of staff to Alberto Gonzales, who was the US attorney general until his resignation last year following accusations of perjury. Ullyot will be based in Facebook's California headquarters, moving from Kirkland's Washington office.

He took the job after spending barely six months at Kirkland, which he joined from Connecticut hedge fund ESL Investments, where he was general counsel for three years.

Earlier in his career, Ullyot was general counsel at AOL Time Warner Europe and chief of staff at the Justice Department of the US government. Ullyot was originally a partner at Kirkland, having spent six years at the firm before joining AOL.

Ullyot will lead Facebook's legal team through difficult legal issues, with the company accused by bloggers last year of infringing on members' privacy with its advertising programme called Beacon.
