Exchange reaches 100-barrister tally

Exchange Chambers has become the latest set to reach the 100-barrister mark following five new barrister hires.

Tom Handley, Exchange's chambers director, said reaching the magic 100 mark was part of the set's strategy to rival super-sets such as Birmingham-based St Philips and No 5 Chambers, which both have more than 170 barristers.

"To have 100 members gives us strength and depth across all our key practice areas," said Handley. "We're committed to an ongoing expansion strategy - particularly in Manchester."

As The Lawyer revealed (6 August 2007), Exchange plans to increase its size in Manchester from 35 to 75 in the next two to three years.

Of the current new arrivals, Keoghs' former commercial litigation chief Jonathan Lowe joins Exchange to strengthen its Manchester commercial practice. Lowe practised as a solicitor for more than a decade, heading up Keoghs' commercial disputes team for eight years. He is requalifying to become a barrister.

William Hanbury of Leeds-based Zenith Chambers will also join Lowe in the Manchester commercial practice.

Andrew Jebb, a deputy district judge from Chester set Nicholas Street, and Bob Golinski of Atlantic Chambers join the criminal practice.

Sara Sutherland from Manchester set Lincoln House adds to Exchange's personal injury capability.

The new hires come as Exchange's silk tally hits 15, with David Casement and Brian Cummings taking their oaths at the end of this month.
