Eversheds' E&Y tax swoop sees firm challenge accountants" />Eversheds is set to expand its tax team after snaring a new head of indirect tax services in the form of property VAT partner Martin Scammell.
Scammell, who joins the firm after two decades at Ernst & Young, told The Lawyer that his vision was to make the tax team a credible alternative for clients to using accountancy firms for managing their taxes.
"By the end of the month the tax team will have expanded from three partners to five, but this is just the beginning," said Scammell, who is a member of HM Revenue & Customs' VAT land and property liaison group.
"In the coming months our focus will be to build a strong client base and show how there is a unique leverage from having a law firm on board for VAT," he added.
Scammell, who starts at Eversheds today (15 January), will work alongside head of tax Tom Daltry and real estate tax partner Sue Taylor.
Daltry said: "I'm delighted that Martin's joining us. He's one of the UK's leading authorities on property VAT and I know that a wide range of clients will be keen to take advantage of his specialist experience."
