This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
Eversheds' media team, headed by partner Nick Valner, is targeting a £9m turnover within three years, from £3.5m presently. The group has also declared its intention to double in size in the same period, from its present 20 lawyers to 40. But as Valner himself concedes, "the difficulty will be finding the right people".
But it's curious timing. Other large firms have dropped their media practices and left it to the specialists, which operate with lower costs and can afford to charge thelow fees media clients demand.
Eversheds' present media strength is primarily in music litigation, where it has a niche in 'advising' dead rock stars such as Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix on royalties cases.
Valner says computer games is the likely growth area, where presumably the firm will be moving on from dead clients to virtual ones such as Lara Croft, Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog.
