European moves: 20 March 2014

All the latest partner hires and other appointments within Continental European firms and offices.

Benelux

Competition and EU partner Efthymios Bourtzalas has quit Ashurst’s Brussels outpost (6 March 2014). It is understood that Bourtzalas is set to join Bird & Bird’s office in the city, which is currently home to 10 partners. Greek-qualified Bourtzalas has been a partner at Ashurst since 2007. He specialises in European Commission law including merger control, state aid, public procurement, and institutional and regulatory law, and has particular expertise in the Greek legal system.

Dutch firm Kennedy Van der Laan has hired Jeroen Zweers as its knowledge & innovation director. Zweers will join the management team and will be responsible for further developing the firm’s knowledge and innovation policy. He previously worked in a similar role at Dirkzwager Advocaten en Notarissen.

Belgian law firm Laga has announced the hire of Benoît Feron as partner in the corporate team. Feron joins from NautaDutilh Brussels where he has been a partner since 1995. Before that he practiced with different Belgian and US law firms.   Feron’s practice focuses on M&A, private equity, capital markets and finance.

Hogan Lovells has announced that corporate partner Jan de Snaijer will take on the role of Amsterdman office managing partner from 1 July. De Snaijer will be taking over from Klaas Bisschop who has managed the office for the last seven and a half years. He currently leads the Amsterdam corporate law team.

Belgian firm Liedekerke has promoted Roel Fransis to its partnership. Fransis specialises in banking and insolvency law.

France

Olswang has bolstered its Brussels and Paris offices with the hire of former Linklaters TMT head Sylvie Rousseau (19 March 2014). Rousseau, who was a managing associate and head of the TMT practice at Linklaters, left the firm in April 2013. She is registered at both the Brussels and the Paris bar and will operate from Olswang’s offices in both cities.

Germany

The flood of arbitration exits from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has continued with the exit of three German arbitrators to launch a boutique, with conflicts of interest cited as the driving force behind the departures (14 March 2014). Cologne-based partner Christian Borris is leaving in a month to launch Borris Hennecke Kneisel with Frankfurt-based lawyers Sebastian Kneisel and Rudolph Hennecke. Hennecke and Kneisel have already left the firm and the three will launch the boutique in May.

King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin is to shut down its Berlin operations, as two of its three partners exit to launch their own boutique (14 March 2014). Corporate venture capital partners Frank Vogel and Jan Dirk Heerma are set to leave the firm to set up their own venture capital transactional boutique. The outpost’s only other partner, tax and regulatory specialist Till Fock, has been offered the chance to relocate to another of the firm’s offices and is currently considering his options. In addition to its three partners, the firm’s Berlin office currently also houses counsel Tilman de Vries, who is set to relocate to Frankfurt.

Ireland

Dechert has recruited Mark Browne as a partner with its financial services group in Dublin. Browne joins the firm from Irish firm Mason Hayes & Curran, where he was also a partner. He specialises in investment funds.

The Nordics

A quartet of partners from Bird & Bird in Sweden have left the firm along with six other lawyers to launch a boutique focused on emerging companies (18 March 2014). Partners Andreas Börjesson, Jim Runsten, Sara Sparring and Johan Tydén launched the new firm, Synch, on 1 March. The partners are joined by six other Bird & Bird lawyers, and the firm will focus on advising start-up companies on M&A, commercial law, regulatory frameworks and IP.

Italy

NCTM has promoted four lawyers to salaried partner. Giovanni de’ Capitani, Andrea Mantellini, Michele Motta and Michele Zucca are all made up. De’ Capitani focuses on banking and finance, Motta on corporate law, and Mantellini is a tax specialist. Zucca has a broad field of practice.

K&L Gates has hired Bird & Bird partner Arturo Meglio as a partner in its Milan corporate practice. Meglio advises public and private companies, private equity funds, and financial institutions on domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions and other transactions.

Russia & CIS

Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners is boosting its capital markets practice with the hire of a team led by the managing partner of corporate and finance boutique Liniya Prava (14 March 2014). Dmitriy Glazounov and a team of nine lawyers and two support staff start work at Egorov Puginsky today. Glazounov will head up the larger firm’s banking and finance and capital markets practices in Moscow.
