An internet legal advice service providing information about EU legislation affecting e-commerce has been launched.
The site, eLexPortal.com, will provide updated information on EU and national laws and regulations on the subject; it is free of charge, and allows users to email queries to its online experts. Funded by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme on research, the site has been set up by IT services company Erin and regulatory specialist Cullen International, which shares the copyright. The site is multilingual and already provides information in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. This will be expanded to cover all 11 EU languages. It is designed to give non-specialist lawyers preliminary guidance on particular areas of law, which could well reduce legal costs for clients by avoiding the need for timely background research. "In many cases, a local legal firm will be unlikely to be in a position to provide information on the legislative situation related to jurisdictions other than their own," said Geoffrey Thompson, Erin managing director and project coordinator of eLexPortal.com.
