Russian firm Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners has made a rare lateral hire into its partnership, adding Baker & McKenzie’s St Petersburg head of dispute resolution and tax.
Egorov, Moscow offices
Ivan Smirnov joined Egorov earlier this month as a salaried partner and will head the firm’s regulatory team in Moscow. He specialises in dispute resolution cases involving public authorities and has represented a broad range of industries on tax, commercial, environmental and antitrust issues.
Smirnov’s hire brings the total number of partners at the firm to 12, five of whom are in the equity. Egorov, which has 186 qualified lawyers across Moscow, St Petersburg and London, has one of the highest lawyer-to-partner ratios of any firm in Europe at almost 16:1.
The low number of partners also means that the firm has one of the highest profit per partner figures of any firm in Europe. The firm, which is ranked 22 by turnover among independent firms in The Lawyer’s European 100 supplement, is estimated to have a revenue per partner figure of around €8.84m, which is close to €19.5m per equity partner.
“Most of our partners traditionally come from within the firm,” said firm chairman Dimitry Afanasiev. “However, this year we’ve made a fundamental decision to search for and bring in several lateral partners who have either substantial international or Russian governmental experience. These two criteria are the key for us and if either one is present in a candidate then we’re interested in such candidate.
“We’re actively looking to hire partner-level laterals with recognised expertise from international law firms to lead practice groups. We’re following in the past footsteps of the leading independent law firms in Europe in this regard.”
Smirnov joined Baker & McKenzie in 2008. Before that he managed the litigation and tax practices for DLA Piper in St Petersburg.
