I wasnt really sure how to react to the news of Clifford Chances (CC) decision to slash subsidies on its staff restaurant (see story). Initially, I thought the magic circle firm was being really tight.
My old law firms canteen played a pivotal role in my life as a junior lawyer. I remember spending many a lunch breaks there catching up with my fellow trainees as I tucked into the cheap nosh. I have to admit I even arranged the odd date down there. Yes tragic I know but it was easier to invite the drop dead gorgeous trainee down the corridor for a casual lunch in the canteen than a drink after work. And no it didnt work we just ended up being friends.
In the evenings, meanwhile, the canteen proved even more vital as it provided a place to go and grab a quick bite to eat in between endless shifts in data rooms. Indeed, there was nothing worse than getting home after a 20-hour day in the office only to find the cupboards were empty.
That said, I also remember wandering down to the canteen with my pals to line our stomachs before the compulsory Friday night booze up as was suggested by one user of Lawyer2B.com.
Indeed, with this in mind Im inclined to side with CC on this one. I havent had access to a subsidised canteen for several years and Ive survived so Im sure CC lawyers will do to.
