With your exams out of the way and the mercury reaching record levels it can only mean one thing – school’s out and summer’s finally arrived.
But before you don your bikini and sun hat there’s one last item to tick off your itinerary – summer vacation schemes. If you’re lucky enough to have secured one or indeed several then check out our updated “How to survive: Vacation Schemes” guide for top tips on making the most of what are now an essential part of a law firm’s recruitment process (read article).
When I completed my vac schemes I absolutely dreaded the drinks receptions that were put on for the summer students. It seemed that no matter how hard I tried I always got stuck talking to the dullest person and then couldn’t get rid of them.
These days I’m a seasoned cocktail partygoer and am slowly beginning to master the art of small talk. Seriously, your behaviour during socials is just as important as your performance during the rest of the vacation scheme. So if you’re anything like I used to be I strongly recommend reading networking coach Will Kintish’s article on how to work that room (see article).
Also, make sure you do your homework by keeping an eye on Lawyer2B.com and the business pages to keep up-to-date with the latest talking points in the City. For instance, how did the credit crunch result in a recession? What impact is the downturn having on the legal market?
Indeed, if you want to really impress then check out the summer issue of Lawyer 2B, which has a great feature on commercial awareness. Additionally, keep an eye on our brand new fortnightly email “Legal Brief” designed to help you keep up to speed with all the biggest deals and cases making the headlines. The second instalment is out tomorrow (Friday).
Saying that, make sure you don’t talk shop all night as that can be equally off putting. So relax and try to have some fun as well.
