EBRD counsel joins Saudi’s ACWA Power

ACWA Power International, a Saudi company specialising in major Middle East power and water deals, has hired Juraj Strasser to the newly created role of general counsel (projects).

Strasser joines from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where he was chief counsel in Moscow. He will be based in Dubai in his
new role.

At ACWA he is charged with managing the legal function and staffing a department as the company expands. He plans to bring on board around seven senior hires.

“ACWA’s a new company. Its international aspirations mean it’s important that the legal department becomes professionalised so it’s capable of efficiently sharing legal work between the in-house legal function and the external counsel,” said Strasser.

To date ACWA’s legal department’s senior positions have traditionally been filled by secondees from external advisers. The company has instructed Ashurst, Chadbourne & Parke, Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy and Shearman & Sterling.
