Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge UK (EAPD UK) is the first UK firm to announce a move into Bermuda after it signed a cooperation agreement with Bermuda-based Marshall Diel & Myers (MD&M).

EAPD UK associate Katie Tornari will move to Bermuda to help MD&M establish an insurance and reinsurance practice on the island. The practice will refer work to EAPD’s UK and US offices.

EAPD UK insurance and reinsurance co-chair David Kendall said: “Bermuda’s key for our international insurance and reinsurance clients. We see our agreement with MD&M as a significant opportunity to enhance the legal services available to our clients in Bermuda.”

The move into Bermuda will bolster the firm’s insurance practice, as Bermuda is notorious within the insurance world for lacking adequate professional support services.

EAPD UK was launched officially on 1 January following the acquisition of Kendall Freeman by Boston-based EAPD (www.thelawyer.com, 30 October 2007).

The Lawyer revealed (25 February) how many City insurance firms are considering expanding into the jurisdiction.

Clyde & Co, Kennedys, Norton Rose and Reynolds Porter Chamberlain have all indicated that Bermuda is on their radar.

    EAPD UK links up for Bermuda launch

    One of the reasons EAPD was interested in taking over Kendalls in the first place was Kendall's Bermuda connections. So this is not entirely unexpected. Bermuda is a tough nut to crack however, as the London based insurance firms have found/will find. RPC say they are sending people out there to check it out; Barlows took a knockback some time ago (but the different departments at BLG would have been too busy kicking lumps out of each other to make anything work there anyway). Only surprise here is that the person being sent out to Bermuda by EAPD is relatively junior.
