Dyson to fill Neuberger's shoes as Master of the Rolls
The Master of the Rolls (MR) Lord Neuberger is to be succeeded in the role by Supreme Court Justice Dyson when the former is elevated to Supreme Court president next month.

The judicial shake-up comes two and half years after Dyson SCJ took up his position on the Supreme Court bench, overseeing some of the country’s highest-profile cases.
In the last year he was part of the judicial panel that ordered Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator at the centre of the News International phone-hacking scandal, to disclose who instructed him at the tabloid (5 April 2012).
Dyson SCJ was believed to have been a favourite for the Supreme Court president position following the exit of incumbent Lord Phillips, who stood down in April to take up international judicial positions from October (9 May 2012). Instead Lord Neuberger was promoted into that role in July (12 July 2012).
The appointment of Dyson SCJ will leave another space open on the Supreme Court bench with the judge taking up the MR role in the Court of Appeal (CoA).
Dyson has held a number of high-profile seats on the bench since joining the Queen’s Bench Division in 1993 from 39 Essex Street where he was head of chambers. He headed the Technology and Construction Court from 1998 to 2001 before joining the CoA and becoming Deputy Head of Civil Justice from 2003 to 2006.

I've always wondered why do judges need to move like that between the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
It seems impossible that no other judge from the Court of Appeal was good enough to fill in the vacancy felt. Of course we don't have the names of the other candidates, but I am sure all of them would be able to do an excellent job had they been chosen to become Master of the Rolls. No doubt though Dyson will be a very good Master of the Rolls.
I also have the same problem regarding the replacement of Lord Phillips by Lord Neuberger. Surely Lady Hale or Lord Mance would make good presidents so why choose someone who hasn't been a Supreme Court justice and presumably doesn't know much about the inner workings of the court? Neuberger left to become Master of the Rolls because he thought (as he reportedly has claimed) that the creation of the Supreme Court was a decision taken "during a glass of brandy"! What changed during these last two years and he decided that now it would be good to join the Supreme court bench again? Why was he chosen over Hale and Mance?
It would really be interesting to know how these decisions are taken and why the lucky applicant is chosen over the others.
