This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
Dundas & Wilson’s new managing partners, who were formally elected last month, have wasted no time getting stuck into their new roles, establishing a pool of paralegals to support the firm’s practice areas by doing drudge work on the cheap.
The new group, billed as a ‘firm within a firm’ by Dundas, is called the Legal Services Unit (LSU). It contains nine paralegals – all based in the firm’s Scotland offices – and is headed by co-managing partner Allan Wernham, with the day-to-day running delegated to solicitor Fiona Letham.
Dundas says there will be no redundancies as a result of the new venture (those came earlier this year) and that the firm is now looking for more paralegals to fill roles.
Fellow Scottish firm Maclay Murray & Spens, meanwhile, has brought in Deloitte to review the firm’s strategy following its aborted merger talks with Bond Pearce. The review is set to conclude at the end of the summer and, according to chief executive Chris Smylie, growth in London is still a top priority.
It seems all the cost-saving initiatives in the world won’t change that imperative for the biggest Scottish firms.
