With 4,200 lawyers located in more than 30 countries throughout the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East, DLA Piper is one of the world's largest law firms.
It has been a successful year for the firm, being ranked as the biggest law firm in the world on a number of global league tables, including The Lawyer's UK 200. DLA Piper hit the top of the table for the first time in 2011 following The Lawyer's decision to take into account the global turnover of all firms, regardless of how profit was shared across offices.
Global co-CEO Sir Nigel Knowles put the growth in global turnover down to the firm’s global nature, allowing certain international businesses to instruct DLA Piper across all practice areas and locations.
In terms of the breakdown of revenue across the firm, litigation and regulation and the corporate practice together brought in more than half of the global revenue last year. Corporate contributed exactly a quarter of income in the UK and was just one percentage point lower globally, while litigation and regulation chipped in 37 and 38 per cent of turnover in the UK and globally respectively.
The intellectual property and technology, employment and restructuring practices are not to be underestimated, together coming in as the third biggest income generator at 14 per cent of turnover globally and in the UK. The rest splits equally between the finance and projects practice and property, which both turn over 12 per cent each.
DLA Piper was one of the first law firms to make its way into the South Korean capital. Seoul joins the ranks of existing DLA Piper Asia outposts in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok and Singapore.
DLA Piper's regional strategy is to promote and be led by a strong corporate and finance offering, aligned with the litigation and regulatory practice. Supporting those key prongs are employment, intellectual property and technology, real estate, restructuring and tax.
