DLA Piper has picked up a team of Frankfurt lawyers from Dewey & LeBoeuf as the stricken firm files for bankruptcy in the US and UK.
DLA Piper hired partner Thomas Schmuck, who co-managed Dewey’s corporate practice in Germany, on 18 May. He joins DLA Piper along with counsel Michael Holzhäuser, who headed Dewey’s German cartel law practice, corporate counsel Ralf Steffen Schmitt and associate Semin O, who also specialises in cartel law.
The hires come as Dewey yesterday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York, with the UK LLP being put into administration on the same day (29 May 2012).
Meanwhile, Baker & McKenzie has announced that it will launch an office in South Africa after taking on Dewey’s entire Johannesburg team (29 May 2012).
In addition, US firm Fulbright & Jaworski has bulked up its London disputes practice with the addition of Dewey’s international litigation and arbitration co-chair Deborah Ruff.
