DLA Piper eyes Latin expansion

Matt Byrne in New York

DLA PIPER is looking to fill the final gap in its global coverage with the hire of a McDermott Will & Emery partner to spearhead the firm's push into the Latin American market.

Tax partner Stuart Berkson, who joins DLA Piper today (9 June), has 28 years' experience of the Latin American region. DLA Piper already has an active Latin American practice but is yet to launch an office in the continent.

"We have no specific plans as yet but we are looking to add this last piece of the map that, as far as DLA Piper is concerned, is dark at the moment," said Berkson.

Berkson's first task will be to assess all his new firm's relationships and clients throughout Latin America and then help it map out a strategy for the region.

Early indications suggest that as well as a likely Brazil launch, DLA Piper's strategy could include opening an office in Miami to act as a gateway to Latin America.
