DLA Piper has become quite a one for the grand statement in recent years, and today's 66 promotions to the partnership was heralded with some fanfare.
Sixty six is indeed some haul. Clifford Chance only promoted 30 associates to the partnership last year.
But headline figures can be deceiving. The firm promoted 17 associates in the UK, where last year 26 got the nod. London reaped 10 again, but promotions were down in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield.
All 21 lawyers who were promoted to the newly created legal director position hailed from the UK, with the northern offices getting the majority. So perhaps it's not so grim up North.
