DLA Piper appoints insurance chief exec

DLA Piper has appointed David Medcalf, the accountant who oversaw the closure of volume business DLA Direct, as chief executive of its UK insurance practice as the firm plans an overhaul. Medcalf, who was chairman of DLA Direct from March 2005 until its closure last year, has been tasked with revamping the insurance practice. “We believe there will be an increased demand by insurance companies to dramatically improve efficiency in a number of areas, including claims-handling,” said Medcalf. He added that the firm would look to lateral hires to boost the practice, which currently boasts around 100 fee-earners, and that it was interested in acquiring whole practices or niche firms.
