DLA Piper acts as Coulson launches claim against News International

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has hired DLA Piper partner Jo Rickards to launch a High Court claim against the defunct newspaper’s publisher, News Group.

It is understood that the claim is in relation to Coulson’s legal fees, which News Group parent News International was believed to be funding. The claim regards News Group’s decision to stop paying Coulson’s fees.

Rickards  joined DLA in February last year from niche litigation firm Peters & Peters, where she co-headed the fraud practice with partner Monty Raphael (15 February 2010).

Coulson sits at the centre of the storm over phone-hacking. In January he resigned as Prime Minister David Cameron’s press chief.

Last month private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was jailed for phone-hacking on behalf of News Group titles, launched a claim against the company after it stopped paying his legal fees. Mulcaire is represented by Payne Hicks Beach partner Sarah Webb.
